The Windmill Family Restaurant started off as an ice cream stand in 1952.

After 20 years of serving ice cream and take out, it fell under new ownership in 1971. It was converted into a sit down restaurant in 1973 called "the gateway restaurant", because it is located at the "gateway" of Lancaster county. After extensive renovation in 1983, the name was formally changed to "The Windmill Family Restaurant" because of its trademark windmill at its front. The building was expanded and improved more throughout the 80's and remains a landmark in the area.
